Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs) - Potential Site Options for Welsh Waters Consultation
Start of consultation: 19/04/2012
End of consultation: 31/07/2012
This consultation seeks views and information on the 10 potential site options in Welsh waters that have been identified by the Marine Conservation Zone
It explains how the potential sites options have been identified and the process that the MCZ Project Wales has followed. The aim is to end up with 3-4 sites for designation, through an iterative, phased consultation process.
This consultation is the first of 3 consultation phases you will have the opportunity to comment on. Please respond either by e-mail or post.
There will also be the opportunity to tell us your views by attending one of the public/sector specific events which will be held during the consultation period.

September 2011
This is the latest information on the Marine Conservation Zone Project in Wales - a project established by the Welsh Government for the identification and ultimate designation of a small number of highly protected Marine Conservation Zones. These sites will support ecosystem recovery, enhancing resilience and improve our understanding of the marine environment. We expect to designate no more than 3 to 4 sites.
Developing Potential Sites
Since we published the Site Selection Guidance in March 2011, the Technical Advisory Group has been working to identify and develop Potential Site options for the first consultation exercise. This involves looking at data confidence, relative ecological merits and, where known, taking into account key potential social and economic activities.
This stage of the project has proved complex and the Technical Advisory Group is still considering the issues.
Next Steps
The Technical Advisory Group now expects to recommend Potential Site options to the Steering Group in December 2011. The Steering Group will consider the recommendations and decide on the Potential Site options suitable for including in the first consultation.
