The young team of Gareth Henshall (16), Toby Collinson (18), Lewis Roberts (17), Henry Collinson (16) and Rob Forshaw (16), finished second at the 2008 RYA Match Racing Youth Championships at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, the sailing venue for the 2012 Olympics. Narrowly missing out on a chance to represent Britain at the prestigious Governor’s Cup International Youth Match Racing Championship in California next summer. However, they have qualified for the Senior Match Racing Finals in October.
The teams background in National squads at Junior and Youth level, helped give them the discipline they needed to compete at their first 'head to head' style Match Racing event.
The team has grown from the North Wales Keelboat training, an initiative from the Welsh Yachting Association using equipment kindly loaned from Plas Menai under they guidance of Tudur Owen, who's team is currently ranked 7th in the world.
The team qualified all the way through the heats, semi finals and into the finals where they were racing for gold against Sam Goodchild, a Member of the Volvo RYA Keelboat Squad. Sam's match racing experience paid off as he continued his undefeated run to win an expense paid place in the Governor’s cup, California
The team is looking forward to continuing there campaign at the finals, and thank everyone who helped get them there.
