North Wales sailors celebrated Christmas in style with the
biggest ever turnout at their Xmas Regatta – while the presents came early for
Edwards brothers Huw and Rowan.
The Port Dinorwic brothers were both winners, Huw winning the
gold fleet in the optimist boat, while Rowan partnered clubmate Daniel Blight
to victory in the 29er fleet.
More than 60 sailors turned out for the event in Pwllheli,
almost double the previous record number of sailors in the North Wales
Christmas Regatta for Youth and Junior sailors.
There were some celebrations for the home club as well as
James Bowler dominated the Topper fleet to secure victory in that category of
boat.
“It really was a fantastic turnout and and excellent day's
sailing in the North Wales Christmas sunshine,” said Welsh Sailing's North
Wales development officer Ruth Iliffe.
“It was great the numbers were so much larger than ever
before, it caps a very good year in terms of the interest in sailing in North
Wales.
“There was some very competitive racing in all the categories,
especially the optimist fleet and Huw Edwards narrowly came out ahead of Ciaran
Jones and Hatty Morsley.
“His brother Rowan was in the 29er fleet, the first time we
have ever had a 29er fleet at a North Wales event, and managed to win along
with Daniel Blight.
“The Laser fleet was another good battle while James Bowler
really dominated the Topper fleet. However it was excellent to see such a high
standard across the board and so many people having so much fun.”
