There were 120 competitors for the event held in Mumbles, large crowds watching from the nearby rocks, with Cardiff Bay claiming the top club, Stanwell school in Penarth emerging as the top school and Pembrokeshire as the top county.

The success was summed up by Will Creaven of Stanwell and Cardiff Bay who won the Optimist class, though there were three more Cardiff Bay teammates in the top five with Alex Cole of Cardiff High, Ciara Berry of Radyr and Jack Nunn of Bishops Hereford.

Cardiff Bay and Bassaleg's Jack Preece won the General Handicap Fleet, while club colleagues David Pain, Tom Pain and Tesoro Monaghan, all from Stanwell, were also in the top 10.

Pembroke school's 14-year-old Danielle Rowe, from Neyland sailing club, claimed top honours by winning the Topper class of boat after being victorious in all the first four races as Pembrokeshire were the top county.

That stunning success early on meant she could relax for the later races as Solva sailor Ellie Meopham, a 15-year-old at Brogwaun school, was able to claim victory in the fifth race on her way to second place overall to give Pembrokeshire a one/two finish.

Tenby sailor Jonathan Morris, aged 15 at Greenhill school, was third in the General Handicap Fleet, but it was the Topper girls who led Pembrokeshire to victory.

“It was a fantastic event with well over 100 competitors and plenty of people watching,” said Welsh Sailing's South Wales development officer Ben Smith.

“It was a wonderful performance by Will and he summed up the double success of Cardiff Bay club and Stanwell school, that really is quite an achievement.

“Jack also did very well to win the general handicap fleet, but those sort of performances really mark them out as having great potential for the future if they carry on working hard.

“It says something for the quality of the work at the Cardiff Bay club that they claimed the award for the second year running, while so many of those sailors also represented Stanwell with distinction.

“It was a superb showing by Danielle on the first day as she won all four of the races, that really is quite an achievement.

“Megan Boorman from Saundersfoot also deserves a special mention for being the first Junior Topper, another strong performer for Pembrokeshire.

“Winning the titles was quite an achievement and the result of so many strong sailing clubs in the area, but this time it really was a case of Cardiff Bay leading the way!”
