Anglesey schoolboy Max Peters will be representing Wales in the national finals of the Honda RYA Youth RIB powerboating championship.

Peters, from Holyhead Sailing Club, had never raced a RIB before but now he is getting ready to go to the South coast to compete in the national finals at the Southampton Boat Show in September.

The 12-year-old from Rhosgoch beat off English-based competition in the Welsh regional finals of the Honda RIB event, aimed at encouraging Welsh youngsters to take up powerboating in a safe and supervised environment.

Stockport’s Matthew Taylor was second in the event held at Pwllheli, while Greg Hewitt from Stoke-on-Trent was third – both are members of the Offshore Sea School at Pwllheli.

Peters has helped out at Holyhead by doing safety boat duty in a RIB boat, but had never competed before until his club secretary recommended entering this competition.

“That was amazing and exciting, I liked the speed and the skill used,” said Peters, who has been involved in sailing all his life.

Tenby’s Charles Stewart-Walvin won the event for 13-16-year-olds and he will also be competing in the finals at Southampton. Pwllheli’s Anna Williams was third after winning the younger age group last year.
