North Wales sailor Thomas Williams became the first ever champion in the Liberty Welsh Topper National Championshps.

The Shotwick Lake sailing club member dominated the event in the first time it has been held, winning three and coming second three times in his counting races held at Llandegfedd reservoir in Gwent

Sara Jackson of home club Llandegfedd came second overall, with Neyland's Danielle Rowe in third place in the event sponsored by Liberty Properties and supported by Welsh Water.

It was the first time this new event had been held and it was well supported with 35 entrants from all around Wales.

Williams was on top form throughout, his discounted race in the seven round series was a third place!

Jackson also won three races, but a pair of third places meant she finished second, while Rowe was the only other competitor to win one of the races and she finished in third place over the series.

“It was fantastic to see the first of these events being so well supported by young sailors from all over Wales,” said Ben Smith, South and West Wales development officer for the Welsh Yachting Association.

“The standard was also very high, with Thomas, Sara and Danielle doing particularly well to dominate the victories.

“It helped that the weather was great and Llandegfedd is a superb venue for competition such as this. Championships such as this will help Welsh sailors compete strongly on the national stage.”
