Cloudy conditions and six knots of wind greeted the Welsh young sailors this morning which meant racing could get under way as scheduled. By the end of the afternoon sailors were also able to enjoy wall to wall sunshine rounding off a very successful day - having got a full complement of three races under their belts.
Racing got under way at 12:05 for the Optimists and Topper sailors and after three races Joshua Burgess leads the Optimist fleet with Miles Jackson in second and Rowan Edwards in third. Ellie Meopham beat all the boys to top the Toppers, with Thomas Williams in second and Michael Becket in third.
Sunday dawned to a bay of tranquillity as sails and flags hung still... Quick action as the event coaches delivered their video debriefs from Saturday to make best use of the time... However rumour got round of Onboard regatta fleet beach football and this quickly became hijacked by the main fleet sailors!!
Later than forecast, 12:00 saw the fluttering of flags, and hopes for sailing returned. Wind. 12:35! All GO! 4 races for the regatta fleet, 2 races for the main fleet in a building and persistent left shift as the wind tracked from NW to SSW during the day!
Out on the main fleet, it was Josh Burgess and Ellie Meophan who maintained their winning ways in some tactical Pwllheli racing under the direction of Mike Butterfield and team.
2009 has seen a big increase in numbers at events in Wales. W.Y.A High Performance Manager said “It’s the SCW grass route funding in clubs which is making the real difference in bringing new sailors to our events in Wales. Coupled with the support of Volvo here this weekend we have seen a really high quality event for those hoping for squad places this year. And a lot of happy faces to go with.”
Tim Hall, (Director of Sailing) added “a great team effort by our staff and volunteers, Pwllheli continues to provide world class sailing on our doorstep in Wales.
Thank you to everyone who made it happen.
