 North Region Christmas Regatta

 15th December 2007

Published: 21/12/2007

A cold day, with light winds greeted the 34 competitors at the Hwylio Gogledd Cymru North Wales Sailing Christmas Regatta. The event, held at Clwb Hwylio Pwllheli Sailing Club, and organised by the club on behalf of the Welsh Yachting Association, was the first North Wales Regional event of its kind to be run by CHPSC, and proved a resounding success.

The majority of North Wales Youth and Junior Sailors were brought together to sail under four classes; General Handicap, Laser, Topper and Optimist. Both the Topper and Optimist sailors were divided into silver and gold fleets. The Optimist Fleet also featured a Training Fleet, allowing the younger and less experienced competitors to get some racing experience, whilst enjoying the benefit of coaching. Fun, festive prizes were awarded in all fleets, with the prize for Best Decorated Boat hotly contested!

The day began with a brief postponement, allowing a little more wind to fill in. Four races were scheduled, and two of these were sailed before lunch. Unfortunately, the wind died whilst the sailors were in, enjoying bacon sandwiches. The decision not to sail the final races was welcomed by all, and the children finished off the afternoon playing on the beach, leaving the parents to pack away the boats!
